The first time around, when Jerome Koko helped get the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau started in the mid-1970s, he was happy playing backyard parties and baby luaus and thought the group as a part-time thing. Then he left the group after several years to pursue other interests and formed a duo with his younger brother John. All for promoting the Sons'

The Tradition of making and wearing lei is deeply rooted in the Hawaiian culture. In 1928, artist and writer Don Blanding suggested that the people of the islands recapture the spirit of lei wearing and celebrate each May 1st as "Lei Day." The following year, the governor proclaimed that all residents "observe this day and honor the tradition of Hawai‘i"
