A Mid Western guitarist obsessed with Polynesian culture who mastered the steel guitar before ever visiting the islands. Retireing he would end up relocating to Hawaii, and teaching the locals how to play their own instrument! Jerry Byrd, 'godfather of modern steel guitar,' died recently. Gerald Lester Byrd were scattered offshore yesterday morning, carried by the tradewinds that also lifted the evocative strains of his steel guitar during his years playing in Waikiki.
Master of Touch & Tone Jerry’s interest in the Hawaiian Steel Guitar became evident around 1932 around 1972, Jerry Byrd left for Hawaii, the land where steel guitar was born. By this time however, Hawaii had essentially turned-its back on the steel guitar, the very instrument that for so long had been synonymous with Hawaii. Jerry Byrd created a rebirth of interest in this beautiful instrument. He has taught hundreds in the new generations that followed all about the role the steel guitar has played in their heritage. He was honored in 1978 by his induction into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. He most certainly was a giant in the music industry and specifically in the history of the steel guitar.
