The Tradition of making and wearing lei is deeply rooted in the Hawaiian culture. In 1928, artist and writer Don Blanding suggested that the people of the islands recapture the spirit of lei wearing and celebrate each May 1st as "Lei Day." The following year, the governor proclaimed that all residents "observe this day and honor the tradition of Hawai‘i"
...and so the custom began!
Lei Day captures the old spirit of the islands and of "Aloha". As Hawai‘i became a popular destination with tourists, the tradition continued to flourish as leis were presented to arriving visitors.
This Year, the Historic Palace Theater in Hilo will re-kindle this great tradition with its First Annual May Day/Lei Day Festival on Sunday, May 1st, 2005.
