Jennifer Pena's Biography As a young girl, Jennifer Pena began singing country music from the '60s and '70s during family reunions and get togethers with friends; in school, she was always chosen to sing during important festivities and events. Inspired by the hit film Beaches, featuring songstress Bette Midler, Jennifer decided she would dedicate herself completely to her calling: music. She was eleven years old at the time.
After two years of constant touring in the U.S. and Mexico, she returns with her newest effort the first for Univision Music Group a full length album entitle Libre. "I'm honored to be part of the Univision family," says Jennifer about the move to a new label.
In January of this year, Jennifer joined Univision Music to continue the development of her professional career. For her new production, Libre, Jennifer worked with Masters Rudy Perez and Kike Santander- both renowned producers and composers. "It was awesome to work with two of the most important producers in Latin Music," she says.
This talented young lady, born in San Antonio, Texas, made her leap into public consciousness, in 1995 as one of the starring acts at a Tribute to Selena. Performing for thousands in the Houston Astrodome
during that show, Jennifer earned immediate affection from her audience with a voice at one tender and soaring.
The following year, in 1996, Jennifer released her first album titled Dulzura. Since then, she has released 1997's Jennifer and Mariposa (1998). By the time her fourth record, Abrazame Y Besame, was issued in 2000, Jennifer was already a popular performer in both the U.S. and Mexico, where she developed a substantial fan base after only a short time. The last album also garnered her a Grammy Nomination in the category for "Best Regional Mexican Performance."
After the successful launch of, "Vamos al Mundial," a powerful dance-pop single also selected as the theme song for Univision's coverage of the World Cup 2002, Jennifer follows up with a moving pop ballad entitled "El Dolor de Tu Presencia (The Pain of your Presence)." The single is accompanied by a video filmed in New York City that depicts her as a university student away from home, growing up and learning life's difficult lessons. In a testament to Jennifer's growing popularity, the single has been serviced to radio in three versions; the original pop ballad from the album, a cumbia version for the explosive regional Mexican radio market and a salsa version for the East Coast and Caribbean listeners.
Scheduled for release n both the U.S. and Mexico by Univision Music and Univision Music Mexico respectively, Libre went on sale June 11th. The album includes 10 songs and 7 bonus tracks; among them pop ballads and rhythmic cumbia versions. Beginning with the current single, Jennifer demonstrates an incredible command and range with a voice that has only gotten better with time. Under the careful guidance of hit-makers Perez and Santander, Jennifer's Vocals in the several styles featured are a delight to the senses.
On songs, such as "Apapachandonos" and "Corazan Bandido"- both written by Juan Marcelo- the regional flavor is sweetened by the smooth and sultry definition apparent in Jennifer's Vocal sounds. The album is, by far, the most complete project for Jennifer thus so far. With a balanced selection of pop tracks and accordion-laced regional tunes, Libre shows just how far she's has come since that impressive early debut. In addition to songs by Perez and Santander, the album also includes compositions by Mario Patino and a track co-written by the legendary Roberto Livi and Rudy Perez.
With her newest release, music fans may notice that Jennifer Pena has undergone some notable changes to her image. As a young woman in pursuit of the dream she's nurtured for almost ten years, she say's "I wanted to change in my life because I don't like always seeing the same thing, I wanted to cut my hair and I did," she adds. "But my make-up style is still pretty much the same."
With this album, Jennifer says, it was the first time she had "a major say in selecting the songs, the clothes, the make-up." After celebrating her eighteenth birthday this year, the young star is excited about making her own decisions as an adult.
Jennifer sums it up when she says, "I feel really free for the first time in my life. I enjoyed a lot of liberty with this record, and I feel like I've made some of the best friends of my life in the process. I have a hard time deciding which song is my favorite."
