MOST people would settle for just being a boy-band star, but not *NSYNC's Joey Fatone. The rhythm-master, move-making singer is showcasing his many talents on various stages these days. Fatone is in the movie sleeper hit of the summer, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" - which is still going well at the box office despite being released back in April. He's also now on Broadway in "Rent."
Fatone plays "Mark, the struggling video artist." While *NSYNC makes more than $1 million a concert, I'm told Fatone is being paid close to the minimum rate of about $1,300 a week for his work in "Rent." But he told me a career on-stage was something he's wanted since he appeared in high school productions of "Guys and Dolls" and "West Side Story."
"I always enjoyed theater. The challenge of being out there on my own and not part of a group is electrifying," he said. But don't translate that statement into a tip that the hunky, bubble-gum pop star is going solo any time soon. Fatone says his stint onstage is merely to fill downtime while the boy band is on hiatus. He insists there is no truth to endless talk about *NSYNC splitting up.
"I'm in 'Rent' until the end of the year - then the guys and I are getting back together to start writing [new songs]," he said.
While he insists *NSYNC is still his "main focus," Fatone says he had so much fun in his last acting gig, a small part in "The Cooler" with William H. Macy and Alec Baldwin, he will "definitely" look to pursue other acting projects in the future.
