VMA awards 2002 Last night at the MTV Video Music Awards, Michael received the award for Artist of the Millenium.
Britney Spears introduced Michael and his award at the ceremony stating, "I am thrilled to be here with you in New York on this special night. And it's even more special because it just so happens to be someone special's birthday. This is someone who has inspired me, and just about everybody in this room, and the world. I consider him the Artist of the Millennium. He's a true innovator who pioneered the use of music video, broke down countless barriers, and sold more records than any other artist along the way...So Happy Birthday, my friend the King of Pop."
Michael was presented a large birthday cake, decorated with a treble clef (musical note).
"God bless you. (To crowd) I love you too. Thank you very much Britney Spears - you look wonderful." Michael said as he joined Britney on stage, "When I was a little boy in Indiana, if someone had told me that one day I would be getting, as a musician, the Artist of the Millennium Award, I wouldn't have believed it. It's really amazing, I can't believe it. Thank you really so very much, but there's a couple of people I have to thank who made this possible. I really want to thank God who makes all things possible, my mother, Joseph Jackson and Katherine Jackson, Trudy Green, Howard Kaufman, the genius of John McClain, John Branca, Berry Gordy, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight. Quincy Jones, I love you. David Blaine, your magic is real and I believe in you. And I'd like to thank... I think James Brown is a genius. And all the fans around the world, I love you, God bless you. Thank you."
MTV's website, in an article dated today, stated, "Britney Spears, outfitted in a black leather cap and matching thigh-revealing dress, introduced birthday boy Michael Jackson and presented him with a tiered cake. She referred to Jackson as "the artist of the millennium," and Jackson, sporting his once-familiar gold-plated shin guards, thought he actually won an award by that name, though no such award exists."
It is unclear to Fan Clubs and fans around the world when MTV decided that this award, that was earlier mentioned on their own website ceased to exist, as stated in the above quote taken from their article. Regardless if Michael officially received an award from MTV or not, Michael did receive the 'Artist of the Millennium Award' from the World Music Awards in 2000, and still holds that title.
Thank you to MTV and MJNI for this information.
