Jackson Summoned to Jury Duty Michael Jackson has been called upon to perform his civic duty; the pop-star received a jury summons at his Neverland Ranch, just four months after a jury of his peers acquitted him of child-molestation charges.
Despite the call to duty, it's unlikely that Jackson will respond to the summons. The Gloved One's legal eagles were busy filing deferment papers, based on the fact that he has pulled up stakes and relocated to Bahrain.
"He is permanently living outside of the United States," attorney Thomas Mesereau said Wednesday.
Jackson has been enjoying the hospitality of Bahraini Crown Prince Abdullah since shortly after his June acquittal.
Due to the Moonwalker's change of address, he will likely be excused from the summons.
"All he has to do is show he has legal residency somewhere else and he'll be exempted," Jury Commissioner Gary Blair told the Associated Press.
Meanwhile, Jackson's most recent whereabouts and activities are, as ever, somewhat unclear.
The singer's spokeswoman, Raymone K. Bain, told the Los Angeles Times that Jackson flew to London last week to work on his much-ballyhooed Hurricane Katrina charity single, "From the Bottom of My Heart."
Jackson has produced two prior charity singles: "We Are the World," his hugely successful star-studded single of the '90s, which raised millions of dollars for African aid and "What More Can I Give," his less successful post-9/11 recording.
Artists including Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Missy Elliott, R. Kelly, Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, James Brown and Snoop Dogg were said to have signed on to contribute vocals to his latest single.
But, according to a publicist who works with some of the artists on the list, many of them were surprised to learn of their participation.
"A lot of the people on that list found out about their commitment when the release came out," the publicist told the Times.
The manager of one Grammy-winning artist said to be in on the project was skeptical about the single's future.
"It's going nowhere," he told the Times, speaking on condition of anonymity. "We had one phone call and nothing has happened since, and I'd be surprised at this point if it did. We're not really wanting anything to do with Michael right now anyway."
However, according to Bain, the single is progressing as planned.
"The project is continuing on a fast track as it has been less than a month since Mr. Jackson announced his plans regarding his Katrina Relief effort," she told the Times via email. "Mr. Jackson looks forward to the participation of the artists whose goals and objectives are the same as his."
Upon its completion, the single is slated to be released on 2 Seas Records Inc., which is owned by Bahraini Crown Prince Abdullah.
